This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to achieve basic riding skills on a well-educated, compliant and manageable horse. It includes protecting the welfare of people and horses and providing pre-exercise and post-exercise care of horses.

The unit applies to individuals who are new or inexperienced in riding horses and who need to attain basic riding skills while working in workplace environments of racing stables, paddocks, yards, racecourses and public areas.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, in accordance with applicable state/territory animal welfare and workplace health and safety legislative requirements.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Identify, catch and secure horse following safe handling procedures and supervisor instructions 
Carry out pre-exercise grooming according to workplace procedures 
Saddle horse with designated gear, ensuring correct and comfortable fit 
Mount the horse safely according to supervisor's instructions 
Perform warm-up procedures according to instructions 
Identify and use aids to control movement, speed and direction of a horse at walk, trot and canter 
Follow basic riding instructions 
Maintain a balanced riding position using appropriate saddle and stirrup length 
Dismount horse safely 
Follow instructions and procedures for safety of self, horse and other horses and riders in the vicinity 
Ride alone and in pairs at varying paces using aids appropriate to the horse's training 
Ride within safety zones when riding in company 
Assess potential risks and take appropriate action to reduce impact 
Report problems and seek feedback on riding skill progress 
Perform warm-down and remove riding gear from horse according to workplace procedures 
Perform post-exercise grooming according to workplace procedures 
Release horse safely following workplace practices 
Clean equipment and check and report wear and/or breakage according to workplace policies and procedures
